Blog Post
This blog celebrates the amazing work farmers and landowners do within the Biosphere to aid nature's recovery. Let's explore some of our favourite pledges! Photo: Gary in Sutcombe
Winner: Carly in Kings Nympton
Carly is a landowner in Kings Nympton and she pledged to make a plan and implement changes to the farm which will benefit nature both in the short and long term. They have created some small areas of wildflowers and are eagerly awaiting to see what results the Spring months bring. They have put up 7 bird boxes, giving a home to plenty of birds that call the area home. They also received funding to plant approximately 1,200 mixed woodland trees, with the aim of eventually linking up with another woodland running down the valley from Wampford Mill to Alswear, creating a wildlife corridor for a variety of species. They are managing their hedgerows well, and used blackthorn saplings to fill holes in hedgerows on the farm. Congratulations, Carly!

Other commendable pledges
Gary and Lynn in Sutcombe

2021 was a busy year on this land! Throughout 2021, Gary and Lynn have changed their field from mown grass to mown walkways which left the areas in between to grow and seed. They know that the bank vole and field mouse population have increased as they now have two kestrels who regularly visit. During the summer they had upwards of 30 goldfinches visit every day. They have planted 26 new trees ranging from oaks, maples, rowan, sycamore, black mulberry and various fruit trees. They have created hedges in the place of fencing, are in the process of completing a wildlife pond, enjoy spotting bats fly to and from their purpose-made 5 metre bat roost, and are even planning on putting up more bird and bat boxes. The list of wildlife Gary and Lynn see on their land is endless, and this landscape is clearly hugely beneficial to a variety of species. Well done Gary and Lynn for all your efforts - keep it up!
Elaine in Parkham
Elaine has been busy creating multiple bug havens on her land. Bug havens are an extremely valuable home to insects, which in turn feeds the birds and smaller mammals, improving overall biodiversity on the land.
