There are so many wonderful community groups within the Biosphere that are working hard to raise awareness of local and global environmental problems.

WINNER: South Molton Sheep Fair Field Community Group

This community have been working hard to create a wildlife-rich field in South Molton. To start their journey, very freshly cut, species-rich and local, wildflower hay was spread throughout the field on August 8th 2021 on our freshly cut and cleared meadow.  There was a high percentage of Yellow Rattle present so they are hoping it will establish well to weaken the existing grass species. The group sent over the species list present in the Sheep Fair Field and found a range of grasses, wildflowers and hedgerow species including: meadow foxtail, tall oat grass, smooth-stalked meadow grass, wild carrot, cow parsnip, cow parsley, mouse-eared chickweed, common mallow, red clover, yarrow and meadow buttercup.

Other commendable pledges

Winkleigh Environment Group

The community in Winkleigh are getting involved in a village-wide partnership project to improve wild flowers on Parish-cut and privately cut roadside verges by allowing some to grow and reducing cutting on others.

Bradiford Bloomers

Residents in Bradiford are working together to reclaim a community garden. They have planted bulbs, put up bird boxes, created a log pile, given the space a bench and created a trellis for climbers to be planted. The group are looking forward to seeing what a new season brings for the space!
