Bumblebee Conservation Trust

• Visit the Bumblebee Conservation Trust website to plan your wildflower meadow creation project, they may be able to provide bumblebee friendly plant seed mixes.
• Use their Bee Kind page to discover how bee-friendly your garden is and learn how to improve it with planting recommendations tailored to your garden’s growing conditions.

RSPB

• The RSPB also has some great advice on starting a wildflower meadow.

Moor Meadows

• Have you heard about the Moor Meadows Project? Moor Meadows is a community initiative to restore, conserve and create flower-rich grasslands across Dartmoor. Their website has key facts and resources to help with meadow creation and management. They now have a FORUM where you can ask questions with people in North Devon and find out about events and training. There is a dedicated forum for those within the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere! Join to learn from other meadow makers, hear about local events and more!

Verges

• Life on the Verge was a three year lottery funded project that worked with communities to identify, adopt and manage roadside verges for the benefit of both wildlife and people. See their getting started guidance booklet for tips on where and how to create your wildflower verge as well as safety tips for working near roads.

• The location of all of Devon’s special verges can be found at Devon County Council’s environmental viewer, under the Ecology/Geology tab. Please email nature@devon.gov.uk if you would like to help manage a special verge or obtain more information (a survey card and management information is available for each).

Which seeds do I buy!?

Wildflower seed mixtures can be designed for a wide range of different soil types and environments. Cornfield Annuals are generally quick and easy to establish and will give you a range of colour in your first year. Perennial meadows often need two years and a bit more management. It's important to try to source from the UK and as locally as possible. Please post on the Pledge for Nature Facebook Page if you have any seeds to swap.
